WHO Raises Warning Over Severe Scarcity of Weight-Loss Medications

Under a tenth of patients eligible to benefit from weight-loss injections such as Wegovy have access to them, caution the World Health Organization as it issues its first guidance on the medications.

Considering in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide currently obese, it is urging increased and just access to GLP-1 medication.

Based on projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 will be living with obesity by 2030 if no action is taken.

"Our new guidance acknowledges that obesity is a chronic disease that can be treated with comprehensive and continuous treatment," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, limited production capacity, and logistical bottlenecks are key barriers to universal access to the injections that can aid individuals in losing considerable weight, explains the body.

Skinny Jab Scarcity

Despite the current most optimistic outlook, the production of such drugs might only reach about 100 million people – fewer than 10% of those who need them, according to the health organization.

The advice calls on nations and manufacturers to increase access, through approaches like patent sharing.

A patent on a key compound – the main component of a leading brand – is due to expire in multiple nations in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Jabs Operate

The injections mimick a biological compound to slow digestion, reduce hunger and boost satiety so users reduce food intake.

People commonly see weight reduction in the initial weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Research suggests users may put most of the weight back on within a year of halting the drug, when their usual hunger come back.

Being above a healthy weight elevates your risk for contracting health problems, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and certain cancers.

Obesity impacts individuals in every country and was responsible for millions of fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
