The boxing world has been a notable downturn this season, with a scarcity of big events and considerably fewer thrilling fights than normal. The prospect of a serious and intriguing heavyweight contest between Joseph Parker and Wardley at the O₂ Arena offers a welcome respite to the beleaguered business. Parker, who turns 34 in January, said: “This is do or die. I am not considering defeat. I honor my adversary and his accomplishments and the way he's trained for this bout. But I am on a superior tier and I am planning to demonstrate it on the day of the bout.”

Wardley’s Outlook

Wardley will be 31 in December, and he said: “This is a monumental event for the two of us. It is clearly the most significant bout of my professional life and the greatest challenge I've faced. But each time I rise to the occasion I rise to the occasion. The upcoming fight will be no different. The divide between where Joe is and what others believe about me has been a recurring narrative in my boxing life.

“He has been going around the block for a long time, with a many bouts on his record. In no way is he an senior boxer but he has been in the game for a long time and had several tough bouts. I too have faced intense battles and I realize they cause wear and tear. He has been in a significantly more of those compared to me.”

But the lingering doubt persists that Parker should prove too experienced, and too skilled, for his opponent. He should win a grueling encounter with the conviction that he is the prime candidate for Usyk – currently the top heavyweight globally by a clear gap.
