🔗 Share this article California's Governor Confirms He Is Considering a 2028 Presidential Run Gavin Newsom, a leading member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he plans to decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 elections conclude. "Absolutely, I would be lying if I said no," the governor stated when pressed about giving serious thought to a White House bid post the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I won't do that." Newsom's time in office as governor wraps up in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. But, he emphasized that any determination is a long way off. "It's up to destiny," he added. Rising Profile as a Trump Critic The California governor has come to the forefront as a notable adversary of the former president's team, employing his social media accounts and advocating for a proposition that would boost the party's congressional seats in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has invited attacks from political opponents. Controversy Over Funds The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor does not care about Californians in a recent appearance on Fox News. Duffy announced intentions to cut taxpayer dollars from California and warned suspending the authority to provide CDLs. "I plan to withdraw $160 million from California," Duffy declared, in the wake of a recently reported tragic collision in California involving an non-citizen commercial driver that caused three deaths and four injuries. Newsom's office noted that the U.S. government had renewed the worker's status repeatedly, which enabled him to secure a commercial driver's license under federal law. Duffy had earlier stated he was withholding $40 million from the state for ignoring language proficiency rules for commercial drivers. Firm Rebuttal from the Governor's Office "Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, fails to grasp national statutes," Newsom's office said in a recent release addressing Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: California commercial driver's license holders had a accident mortality rate much lower than the national average. Texas – the sole state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest." Public Opinion and Future Prospects A recently conducted survey showed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and a significant portion of the electorate said that the governor should run for the White House in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has risen to an average of 33.5% from around 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an average of over 40% to under 40%. Some time ago, Newsom stated while on a trip several battleground states that he had "no idea" about his intentions for the next presidential election. He noted his personal struggles, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five. "The idea that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was typically not at the front – that such a possibility is discussed is, in and of itself, remarkable," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I await who emerges in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the American people."
