Although not quite at the identical stature as pardoning holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven. Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood. “This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the vast quantity of pardons issued since the beginning of a new presidential term. “Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life away from worry.” The gathering, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House. The pardon took place at the Latin Cafe. Image: Provided of event organizers. The animal, donated by a first responder, was named for the current slang trend of young people yelling “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The craze became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently named “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection. A Peaceful Retirement The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement. “The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message. “It embodies the character of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Annually, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.” Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
