A extensive search and rescue operation is actively ongoing in the Caribbean waters for two missing sailboats loaded with relief goods en route from Mexico to Havana.

Military Search and Rescue Missions Deployed

The Mexican government has dispatched naval teams and military search aircraft to find the missing boats, which were transporting a minimum of nine personnel, according to a military release.

The vessels had been projected to arrive in the Cuban capital on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their arrival, the statement clarified.

The Situation of Relief to Cuba

The island nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the nation grapples with repeated national electricity failures.

"Both skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and both vessels are outfitted with appropriate safety systems and emergency beacons," an official associated with the mission stated.

The nine-person crew are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their embassy officials.

"We are collaborating completely with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the spokesperson added.

Previous Aid Delivery

Previously that week, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and officially received a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tons of relief supplies to the country.

That ship, dubbed "Granma 2.0" following the name of the vessel in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to begin the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, delivered photovoltaic panels, medicines, formula milk, cycles and foodstuffs.

Larger Geopolitical Climate

Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of initiatives to ship critical assistance to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation began.

Global bodies have since highlighted ""critical" lack of essential goods, with more than fifty thousand surgical procedures postponed in Cuba because of electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy measures have been ramped up lately, with statements from several representatives emphasizing the delicate state of diplomatic ties.

In response to previous proposals, a senior government figure insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Indications suggest that preliminary steps of discussions had begun, although their current progress remains uncertain.

The maritime authorities said it was committed to using every available asset at its command to locate the vessels and secure the security of the people on board.

To date, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
